The most disciplined person I have ever known never set foot in a weight room. My mother ran a sewing workshop in Natitingou, in northern Benin. She never sat in a classroom. Every morning she opened before everyone else. Every evening she closed after everyone else. And every franc she earned went to keeping her children in school.
I call it invisible work: the kind nobody applauds, the kind that only shows in the results, years later. Everything I built afterward rests on it.
What rebounding taught me
In basketball, my job was the rebound. It is not the most elegant play in the game. It is a battle repeated hundreds of times a night, won by going back one more time than the man next to you. I led the French league in rebounding without being the tallest player on the floor. A rebound is persistence you can measure.
Talent opened doors for me: a scholarship to the United States, Villanova, a professional career in Europe. But at every level there were players more gifted than I was. The ones who lasted were not always the most talented. They were the ones who did the work when nobody was watching.
The same rule, off the court
When I arrived at HEC Paris after my career, I became a beginner again. At networking events I sometimes stood in a corner, decoding a language I did not yet speak. An athlete's ego is useless in those moments. Discipline is not. Prepare every meeting, reread every case, ask one more question. Invisible work, again.
It is also what we teach the young people of MY BARIKA: talent is a starting point, never a plan. Discipline depends neither on your height, nor on the country you were born in, nor on luck. It belongs to you alone.
